A Powerful Opening for Women’s Sport
Day 1 of the Belgotex Sport Girls Challenge delivered exactly what this tournament continues to stand for. High level hockey, meaningful competition and a platform that is elevating women’s sport in South Africa.
Across eight venues, 72 teams took to the field with intent. There was no easing into the tournament. The pool format demanded sharpness from the first whistle, and throughout the day teams responded with performances that showed both quality and belief.
This is what the women’s game looks like right now. Confident. Competitive. Visible.
U14 | Setting the Tone Early
The U14 section produced a mix of composure, dominance and big moments.
Durban Girls College showed maturity in Pool A, securing top spot with a 2-2 draw against Paarl Gimnasium after a strong opening win, with Maria Lambert and Natalie Spiers on target.
Rhenish and Bloemhof were ruthless, both scoring nine unanswered goals to control their pools, while Parel Vallei came through one of the toughest groups with two 2-1 wins, Taylor Pepperell delivering in both games.
Pearson were efficient, Eunice controlled their pool, Stellenberg showed their strength across both matches, and Affies held firm in a tight Pool H where a draw against DSG proved enough to qualify.
Different routes, same outcome. Eight strong teams moving forward.
U16 | Control and Execution
The U16 competition highlighted just how important small moments are.
Paarl Gimnasium were clinical, recording two clean sheets. Waterkloof delivered one of the standout results of the day, a 5-0 win securing qualification on goal difference after a tight draw earlier.
St Johns DSG and DSG both managed pressure well to progress, while Bloemhof topped their pool without conceding. Rhenish were again dominant, Affies edged two tight wins, and Our Lady of Fatima impressed with back to back victories.
At this level, it comes down to discipline and execution. The teams that got it right moved on.
U19 | Quality Under Pressure
The U19 section brought intensity and expectation.
Paarl Gimnasium set the standard early with two strong wins, while DSG and Collegiate both advanced on goal difference, underlining how crucial big results can be.
St Mary’s DSG Kloof stood out with two wins without conceding, while Waterkloof showed their quality by overcoming a strong Parel Vallei side.
Affies balanced resilience and control to progress, Herschel edged through on goal difference in one of the tightest pools, and Reddam Constantia completed a composed opening day with two solid wins.
The Standard is Set
Day 1 was not about trophies. It was about setting the standard. And that standard is clear. As the tournament moves into Day 2, the pressure rises and the margins tighten.
But one thing is already certain. The women’s game is not building toward something. It is already here.
