The Road to the Finals
Day 2 of the Belgotex Sport Girls Challenge shifted everything up a level.
The pools were done. The margins disappeared. It became knockout hockey, where moments define outcomes and pressure reveals character.
Across all three age groups, the road to the finals was built on composure, resilience and players stepping into big moments.
This is what makes platforms like this so important for women’s sport. These are not just games. These are moments where players learn to deliver when it matters most.
U14 | Bloemhof vs Rhenish
The U14 final brings together two outstanding teams who have taken very different but equally impressive routes.
Bloemhof’s journey has been built on control and discipline. They edged a tight quarter final against Pearson, with Kate Haumann scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win. In the semi final, they produced one of the performances of the day, shutting out an impressive Durban Girls College side. Goals from Amelie Peters and Nina Swanepoel secured a 2-0 win and a place in the final.
Rhenish, by contrast, have had to navigate pressure. Their quarter final against Stellenberg could not be separated in normal time, and it was only in the shootout that they held their nerve to progress. In the semi final they found their rhythm, with Fae Readings scoring twice and Kate Higgs adding a third in a strong win over Eunice.
A final built on control against momentum. It promises to be special.
U16 | Paarl Gim vs St Johns DSG
The U16 final sees two teams who have shown composure in different ways.
Paarl Gim have combined structure with big moment execution. A 2-0 quarter final win over Our Lady of Fatima, with goals from Annabelle Fourie and Willanie du Preez, set them up well. In the semi final, they were pushed all the way by Rhenish. Willanie du Preez cancelled out Liv de Beer’s goal before Paarl Gim held their nerve in the shootout to book their place in the final.
St Johns DSG have built their run on fine margins. Amy van Breda’s goal was enough to see off DSG in the quarter final. In the semi final, they found a way again. Goals from Alexi Whiteman and Olivia Balmer proved decisive against Waterkloof, with Zene Claasen’s response not enough to turn the result.
Two teams who know how to win tight games. That is what finals are about.
U19 | Waterkloof vs Collegiate
The U19 final has all the makings of a classic.
Waterkloof have had to fight for every step. After a goalless draw with St Mary’s DSG Kloof in the quarter final, they came through a shootout to stay alive. Their semi final against Paarl Gim was one of the matches of the tournament. Trailing after two goals from Alanda Rademeyer, they responded with incredible character. Dania Opperman, Jenna Terwin and Lenique Vogel turned the game around to secure a remarkable win.
Collegiate’s path has been defined by control. A 1-0 win over Affies in the quarter final, thanks to Sophia Jansen, set the tone. In the semi final, they delivered again. Kerrin Gillies’ goal proved decisive in another tight contest against DSG.
Different journeys. Same destination.
Finals Await Three age groups. Six teams. One last step. Day 2 showed what these players are capable of under pressure.
