Cape Co-Ed day 1 quality shines through the rain!

Although the weather down in the Cape was far from perfect, it could not dampen the excitement of the Cape Co-Ed u13 Cup powered Belgotex Sport. 16 boys teams and 16 girls teams are battling it out for the title as Co-Ed champions.

The opening day of action saw the group stages play out with the top team in each pool progressing to the cup semi-finals. Second place dropped to the Plate, third into the shield and fourth in the bowl semi-finals.

We focus on who has come out on top of each pool and how they got there ahead of finals day on Saturday.

Girls Tournament

Pool A – Durbanville
Durbanville were perfect on their march to the summit of Pool A. They started with a whipping 5-0 win over Curro Durbanville thanks to a brace from both Lara Talke and Ryley Bland. It was a tighter affair in a 2-1 win against Beaumont putting them on the cusp of the Semi-Finals. Their spot was confirmed with a workmanlike 2-0 win over St Cyprians thanks Lisa Krige and Leah Goebel.

Pool B – Outeniqua
They began their journey on the right side of a five goal thriller against Panorama winning 3-2, Bekker, Moolman and Raubenheimer netting. They were then held to a pulsating 1-1 draw with Somerset scoring through Anri Hefer. They knew a victory against Wynberg would secure top spot and they did it with a Bella Coetzer goal to win 1-0.

Pool C – Eikestad
They started their day with a good 2-0 win over Kenridge with Nina Smit scoring both goals. They were even better in the second game winning 3-0 over Fish Hoek thanks to goals from Julia Johnson, Manina Stofberg & Milla Moolman. They knew thanks to superior goal difference they needed just a draw in their final game and that’s exactly what they got a 1-1 draw against Herschel and progress by virtue of goal difference.

Pool D – Gene Louw
They were the other “perfect” team on Day 1 winning 3 out of 3. They started with a 1-0 win over De Hoop and followed that up with a convincing 3-1 win against Play Smarter. Annalene van Zyl, Helen van Eck and Helena Nel the goal scorers. They completed the third win a tight affair winning 2-1 against Hermanus.

Boys Tournament

Pool A – De Hoop
Hendrik van Wyk was the star as De Hoop started off their tournament with a resounding 4-1 win over Durbanville. He added another two in a 3-0 win over Hermanus that set De Hoop up for a possible spot in the Semi-Finals. That place was confirmed in a brutal 6-0 win over Fish Hoek with van Wyk scoring an incredible 5 for himself.

Pool B – Bishops
Bishops were also impressive in their three pool games, winning all three and scoring for fun. A 6-0 win against Panorama set the tone with six different goal scorers. They next won 8-1 against Curro Durbanville with a brace for each of Jack Gibbon, Macen Lesbirel & Max Wides. It was another 6 unanswered in the final group game against Somerset with John Weir-Smith hat-trick the telling contribution.

Pool C – Beaumont
Beaumont got their day off to a tight start winning 1-0 against Gene Louw, Nathan Phillips netting the only goal. They then earned a 3-0 win against Eikestad before a big 7-0 win over Rondebosch with Nathan Phillips netting his own tally of four to complete a good personal goal scoring day.

Pool D – Kenridge
They are the only one of our semi-finalists that didn’t win 3 out of 3. They drew the opening game of the day 1-1 with Paarl Boys, Joss Muirhead the goal scorer. They won their next game 4-1 against Somerset and seeing that Paarl Boys had drawn they knew a win against Outeniqua would be enough. Connor Daniel and Karl Pienaar got the goals to secure a 2-0 win and a place in the Cup Semi-Finals.
