Kearsney Hockey Fives day one recap: A thrilling start
The Kearsney Hockey Fives tournament, powered by Belgotex Sport, has quickly cemented its place as a premier fixture on the South African Schools Hockey calendar. Known for its fast-paced action, the two-day event leaves no room for a blink, with non-stop excitement from start to finish.
This year's edition brings together 8 top boys' high school teams—Clifton, Ashton, Garsfontein, St. Albans, Michaelhouse, Hilton, Westville Boys, and the hosts Kearsney—and 6 competitive girls' teams—Curro, Maris Stella, Ashton, Thomas More, St Mary’s, and Danville. There's also plenty of young talent on display in the primary school tournament.
With all teams competing in a single pool, the stakes are high, as only the top two will advance to the finals.
Girls' Standouts: St. Mary’s delivered a standout performance, clinching a thrilling 5-4 victory over Thomas More to maintain a perfect record on Day 1 with three wins. Danville joined them at the top of the standings, also winning all three of their matches, with an impressive 20 goals scored and only 2 conceded. Their upcoming clash with St. Mary’s promises to be a must-watch on Saturday.
Boys' Standouts: Garsfontein stole the show on Day 1, winning all five of their matches and topping the table with some remarkable victories, including a nail-biting 3-2 win over Hilton and a hard-fought 2-1 triumph against Westville.
In a thrilling encounter, Clifton and Michaelhouse battled to the only draw of the day, a pulsating 3-3 affair. Meanwhile, Hilton bounced back strongly after their defeat to Garsfontein, winning all their remaining matches and positioning themselves as front-runners for a spot in the final.
