The greatest plays in history have adorned theatres across the world. They include the likes of Hamlet, Hamilton, The Lion King and Dear Evan Hansen in recent years. The thing that people like about plays is there is a story, an arch, anticipation and delivery of a beautiful story. A lot of people like that there are usually two acts and a little break in the middle.
The Belgotex Sport Fairmont Easter HockeyTournament is able to deliver all the same virtues as a great Broadway masterpiece, with day 3 even offering us two acts of entertainment on the way to the epic delivery.
Act 1 of Day 3 was the deciding of the semi-finalists which we poignantly described yesterday. Charlie Hofmeyr continued their fairy-tale run and confirmed a spot in the in the final four when they held Bishops to a goalless draw to end top of Pool A. Their reward for their victory was a meeting against Paarl Gim who completed a perfect five out of five with an 8-0 victory against Stellenberg to top off group B.
The two sides were joined in the semi-finals by Pearson High School, who secured their semi-final right with a win over Somerset College to leapfrog the favourites into the final four, where Windhoek Gym had already tied down a spot before today’s games.
In the girl’s tournament Fairmont andSomerset did exactly as expect and set up a repeat of their 2021 final for theGroup A and B winners Semi-Final. St. Cyprians of course had the goal difference ahead of the final group game and they confirmed their spot in the top four as expected, pretty straight forwardly. For Pearson it was a titanic tussle with ES Academy decided by just the one goal that brought the curtain down in remarkable fashion on the opening act.
And so, as the curtain raised for the second act of the day, the Semi-Finals, it also raised on the video referral system, a tournament leader in Schools tournaments. And so, the final-four battles
Pearson and St Cyprians played out a pulsating play-off with Pearson taking the lead but not holding on to. The game would go all the way to a penalty shootout and the plucky Video Referral character would play a pivotal role in ensuring a fair result for the two teams involved. In front of a crowd that was louder than a full Broadway audience it was the St Cyprians girls who showed the character and emerged on the other side of the shootout as victors.
In a repeat of the 2021 final, Fairmont were defeated by Somerset College. Somerset College will have the opportunity to defend their title after a 2-0 victory was enough to see off the hosts in a tight battle.
The fairy-tale for Charlie Hofmeyr ended without the happily ever after as they were silenced by the superb Paarl Gim. Windhoek Gym will be the opponents in the final after coming from behind to draw their semi-final with Pearson. The shootout that ensued was one of the finest experiences to witness live and it was the Namibians who earned their spot in the final.
Tomorrow will see the teams battle it out for the trophy, the bowl and the plate tomorrow, while the individual prize winners will be announced and the tournament team will be announced, selected by Travel & Sport. This team will travel to The Netherlands, Belgium andGermany to play five matches and a couple of training sessions in September this year. A special moment for some special talent!
