Outdoor Hockey
The Belgotex Sport Fairmont Easter Tournament was an electrifying display of Southern African school hockey that left spectators on the edge of their seats. From the fireworks on and off the field to the nail-biting shootouts, this tournament showcased the incredible talent and passion of young hockey players.
Carlon Mentoor was the chief pyromaniac in orchestrating the fireworks on the field in the boy’s tournament. The overall top goal scorer, the player of the tournament and the star in the final gave his team Paarl Gim the lead early on. They doubled the lead through Marcus Basson, but despite a goal for the SACS Invitational side and more pressure than the Proteas in an ICC Knockout match, the equaliser could not be found, and the 2022 champions were also the 2023 champions.
In the girls final the sensational Woodridge took an early lead throughJemma Maartens. Both goalkeepers put in top quality performances throughout the game before Monument scored a late equaliser from Mia Kruger. Woodridge headed into their 3rd shootout in 3 matches, and it went all the way to sudden death before Monument saw the winner scored by Hannah Smyth and were crowned 2023 Belgotex Sport Fairmont Easter Tournament Champions for the first time.
The Co-Ed Cup is the trophy awarded to the school that ends the highest in the boys and girl’s section. Congratulations to Woodridge who are your 2023 Belgotex Sport Fairmont Easter Tournament Co-Ed Champions! What an incredible display by Woodridge both on and off the field!
This tournament was a celebration of youth, competitiveness, and the power of sports to bring communities together. It would not have been possible without the support of our incredible sponsors, the dedication of the local organising committee, the hard work of the coaches and officials, and the unwavering support of parents and fans. We have no doubt that the Belgotex Sport Fairmont Easter Tournament will continue to be the pinnacle of co-ed hockey in Southern Africa for years to come.
