SA Hockey IPT 2023 | Women’s QuarterFinal line up decided on Day 3

After three days of group action the line-up is now decided for the business end of the competition as Quarter Finals arrive on Thursday.

Western Province have been breath-taking in attack in this tournament and offered very little opportunity for their opponents in defence. That trend continued on Wednesday morning against SG Witsies. A rampant Province went into the half time break with all of Rebecca Kaps, Nicole Koenig, Laylaa Davids and Kayla de Waal adding to Tarryn Lombards double upfront. The impressive Sash Siversten extended the lead before a Kaylim Bowyers consolation goal before another brace this time for Onthatile Zulu wrapped things up convincingly for Western Province. 22 goals in three games for a team who are in hot form heading into the knock out stages.

The South African U21 ladies bounced back from their defeat to Western Province to secure a second placed finish in their pool with a solid victory against Free State. Ntsopa Mokoena opened with a simple finish after a good cross. The second goal was almost a carbon copy of the first but finished off by Mmamorena Manthatha this time. Just before half-time Kayla Swarts fired home a low shot from a penalty corner to make it 3-0 at the break. A sublime pass from Cerian Fourie set up Jenna Blaauw who finished superbly before Reatile Pitso pulled one back for FS. Fourie would get herself on the scoreboard with a late strike and seal second spot in the pool with a resounding 5-1 win.

North West and Southern Gauteng met in a battle that would likely decide the runner up in Pool B. North West took a lead in the 7th minute when Tamarie Myburgh finished off a great team effort up the right hand side. Despite the best efforts of Southern Gauteng they could not find an equaliser and ultimately had to settle for a 1-0 defeat to a superb North West performance.

What both North West and Southern Gauteng would not have anticipated was a remarkable performance from the KZN Raiders in defeating the defending champions the Northern Blues. In what was undoubtedly one of the games of the tournament so far, the hosts took the lead through an early Charlene Boshoff penalty corner stroke, that was pegged back by a Kiana Cormack stroke shortly thereafter. Lilian du Plessis re-established the lead with her own stroke but Marguerite van Wyk once again levelled matters deflecting home from a Tegan Fourie drive. The hosts would not be denied converting from a goal mouth scramble and this time holding on for a victory that would catapult them to second spot in the group.

In the B Section the group stages will reach their conclusion tomorrow with no Quarter Final round at play. WP Peninsula managed to score 7 unanswered goals across their two games today beating Mpumalanga 2-0 (Erin Coetzee & Ashleigh Thomas) and Eastern Gauteng U21 5-0 (Jade Southon, Erin Coetzee, Rachel Kaps, Jenna Fyvie & Coreen Matthee). Eastern Province ran rampant against Eastern Gauteng winning 9-0 (Chelsea Cooke (3), Mathapelo Pitso (2), Elan van Vught (2) & Tasmyn Preller (2)). KZN Mynahs also kept a clean sheet with a 4-0 win over Northern Cape (Megan Corjees, Ruby Kraus, Brooklyn Kroutz & Zoleko Ngubo).

Border beat KZN Robins in a game littered with cards by a score line 5-2. Bianca Wood continued her fine form with a brace, while Antonet louw (2) and Zukhanye Tyanlintsika scored for Border, Tara Pakendorf and Elizabeth Anderson had given the hosts a 2-0 lead.
